Patent Examiner – European Patent Office (EPO)
Description:
As a Patent Examiner at the EPO, you'll explore breakthrough technologies before they reach the public. You'll assess whether inventions meet the criteria for patent protection and, in doing so, support innovation that improves lives, drives industries and shapes the future.
Your work combines deep technical analysis with legal reasoning: examining applications and drawings, researching prior art and making structured, evidence-based decisions. You'll collaborate with international colleagues in a diverse, inclusive environment.
No prior IP experience is needed — full training is provided, including a comprehensive two-year development programme.
Responsibilities:
Examine patent applications, including technical documentation and drawings, in English, French or German
Analyse new inventions to evaluate novelty and inventive step
Research prior art using digital search tools, scientific databases and patent information sources
Apply legal and procedural frameworks to decide whether a patent should be granted
Communicate findings clearly and constructively with applicants and other parties
Collaborate with international colleagues
Maintain high quality standards with attention to detail and scientific rigour
Ensure fair and consistent application of the European Patent Convention (EPC) and related legal texts

Contract & location
Five-year contract, renewable (full-time)
Hybrid: Germany (Munich/Berlin) or the Netherlands (The Hague)
Positions starting from 2027; talent pool also being built for 2028

Minimum requirements
Master's level diploma in one or more of the technical fields listed
C1 in one official language (English, French, German) and understanding of the other two; alternatively C1 English with willingness to reach B2 in the others
Citizenship of an EPO member state
Industry work experience is an advantage

Salary: €7,076 – €10,164 net/month (depending on location and experience)
